Benedict’s solution is a reagent used to test the presence of glucose in the urine. Glucose found to be present in urine is an indication of diabetes. Once sugar is detected in the urine, further tests have to be undergone in order to ascertain which sugar is present. Benedict’s reagent is a chemical reagent and complex mixture of sodium carbonate, sodium citrate, and copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate. It is often used in place of Fehling’s solution to detect the presence of reducing sugars. The presence of other reducing substances also gives a positive result. .
